Alginate dressings are excellent sterile wound dressings composed of calcium alginate for use on moderately to heavily exuding wounds.
Alginate dressings are excellent sterile wound dressings composed of calcium alginate for use on moderately to heavily exuding wounds.
When applied to a wound there will be an ion-exchange between the calcium in the dressing and sodium from the exudate, forming a soluble calcium/sodium alginate gel. The free calcium ions in the wound will amplify the clotting cascade and can reduce bleeding. The interaction with the wound exudates will create a protective gel that is nonadherent and creates a moist wound healing environment.
