Caring for a child with Asthma:
Caring for a child with asthma can be frightening for parents and carers, but with good knowledge and management, it can usually be well controlled.
Once the diagnosis is decided, treatment is often with trials of different doses of medication. The aim of good asthma emergency management is to ensure that children can lead a normal healthy life while taking only as much medication as is needed to keep them well and avoid asthma flare-ups.
Flare-ups do happen, and in children, they are most often caused by colds and flu, which are almost impossible to avoid. Every child with asthma should have an Asthma Action Plan which explains how to recognise worsening asthma, and what to do about it.
Carers should also learn asthma first aid, and you or the child should have a blue reliever puffer with them at all times. Medical Solution can supply an Asthma Emergency First Aid Kit that includes spacers, Ventolin and instructions. Buy an Asthma First Aid kit here.
Using a spacer with a puffer makes it easier for people to take their medication, reduces the risk of local adverse effects and also increases drug delivery to the airways. Generally, using a spacer with a puffer is much better than using a puffer alone. Asthma Australia and the National Asthma Council recommend that everyone use a spacer with their preventer puffer and many people can benefit from using the spacer with their reliever medication also. Medical Solution has 2 types of spacers available for purchase. Cardboard disposable spacer and a plastic (reusable) spacer.
